Minnesotan Breaks Record For Growing Largest Pumpkin At 2,560 Pounds During Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off
A gigantic pumpkin named “Maverick” broke the North American record at 2,560 pounds, just a week after the previous record was set.
The record pumpkin was grown by Travis Gienger from Anoka, Minn., and weighed in at the 49th Annual Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay, Calif., on Oct. 10.
A video shared by Twitter user @Natbat shows the moment the pumpkin’s weight was announced.
“Travis, you got gas money,” the announcer says, revealing the $9/pound prize amount of $23,040.
“Travis had to spend $1100 just in gas to get here,” @Natbat tweeted alongside the video.
The North American record was previously broken on Oct. 2 at the World Pumpkin Weigh Off at The Great Pumpkin Farm in Clarence, N.Y. Grower Scott Andrusz of Andrusz Giants in Williamsville, N.Y., entered a pumpkin weighing in at 2,554 pounds.
